7 Ways To Stand Out From The Crowd!

Welcome back ladies and gents and all those in between J

In this installment of “Change Your Attitude & Change Your Life” I’ll get us started with a quick story of two very different people. Perhaps you know them, Charlie Disapppointeddunsky and Laurie Reallysuperhappy? May be if you haven’t met them personally, I’m sure you’ve met people like them! Check out this little ditty J

Once upon a time, there lived little boy named Charlie Disapppointeddunsky. He was one of those kids who never really spoke up, didn’t cause any trouble, and basically went through life going with the flow as they say. Charlie never really took any initiative to be anything more than average. His parents were average, his friends were average, and as a result he was average. But as Charlie became an adult, he started noticing stuff changing around him. He kept running into these people, these people with genuine smiles on their faces, who laughed a lot, and were recognized for their efforts. One such person was a coworker named Laurie Reallysuperhappy.

So, there they were, Charlie and Laurie working in the customer service department for a major music retailer. Both showed up to work on-time every day, both were cordial to their coworkers, but that’s about all they had in common. Charlie, who’s been average all his life, began a slow decline in work performance when Laurie came on board in the department. For the first time in his life, poor Charlie found himself depressed. He’d been there for 10 years, never got into trouble, but soon after Laurie was hired, she became the department lead.
As you’d expect, Charlie was MAD! He expected to be promoted – NOT Laurie!

Laurie, from the time she was hired, was a serious “Go Getter”! In a nutshell, she stood out among all of her coworkers based on her consistent performance. She didn’t take anything for granted and always strived to learn more, provide more, to be an asset rather than simply an expense to her boss and the company.

Listen guys, now more than ever, you must take your performance to the next level if you want to succeed in life.

Here’s what I’ve personally learned (from my own screw-ups) and subsequently taught people how to stand out from the crowd:

#1 PERCEPTIONS ARE REALITY

Understand no matter what you do or say, perceptions are reality. In other words, if everyone sees you more as a pain in the neck than an asset to the team – guess what? You’ll probably get overlooked for promotions etc. Heck, you might even get canned! Sorry, it doesn’t matter what you think of yourself.

Know how people really perceive you. Honesty hurts, but it’s the catalyst to growth. I know – I’ve had to grow a lot J

#2 BIG ENOUGH WHY

When you have a big enough WHY you’ll find a big enough HOW! Sometimes we’re lazy and don’t want to put in the extra work until it’s too late. But, when you keep the most important reason for why you want to make more money, be more successful, and ultimately be happier, you’ll find strength to push yourself that much harder. Keep a picture of your family right in front of you and when you don’t feel like it, look into their eyes and keep your promise to make their lives better! Live your legacy NOW!

#3 SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THEN…

This says it ALL!

Quit assuming and start understanding! An amazing thing happens in your life almost immediately when you spend more time understanding what people are really about. When you really know what they want and more importantly expect. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason J

#4 EXPECTATIONS

When you think about all the frustration in the world it comes down to a person’s expectations not being met. I mean slap me if I’m not right on this one! Again, amazing stuff happens when you really understand what’s expected of you. This applies to every area of your life. Also, stating your expectations is just as important. No excuses like “Well, they should have known” are acceptable. Make dang sure you have these down pat!

#5 ACCEPT IT OR CHANGE IT

We’re talking about standing out from the crowd and complainers definitely stand out from the crowd right? But, negatively which doesn’t bode well for a smooth climb up the ladder. There’s two things you can do in any situation you’re not happy with – accept it or change it. Complaining and expecting it to be fixed is about as productive as hammering a nail with a roll of toilet paper!

Get off your butt and take responsibility for your attitude and your actions!

#6 PART OF THE PROBLEM OR SOLUTION?

We’re talking about standing out from the crowd and complainers definitely stand out from the crowd right? But, negatively which doesn’t bode well for a smooth climb up the ladder. There’s two things you can do in any situation you’re not happy with – accept it or change it. Complaining and expecting it to be fixed is about as productive as hammering a nail with a roll of toilet paper!

Get off your butt and take responsibility for your attitude and your actions!

#7 EXCUSES VERSUS REASONS

Simply put, excuses are lies we tell ourselves and others to make us feel better about what we aren’t doing that we should be. The most common excuse “I didn’t have the time.” Complete CRAP! Really, you didn’t make time. But when you have a big enough WHY you will find a way. Get up ½ hour earlier, use your lunch hour, but make time! If you really listen to yourself , and you’re honest, you’ll find you have a LOT more excuses than reasons. Reasons mean you take responsibility for your actions or inactions.

Again, with technology displacing the work we do at a growing rate, you HAVE to be known for standing out/above your competition! Listen, at the end of the day, if the executives are sitting in a room, looking at a list of employees, needing to make cuts, when they get to your name, you want an unanimous, enthusiastic, no second thought needed, “YES – WE NEED THIS PERSON!”

All my best for your KICKASS happiness and success!
